Wearing out piston rings

Old cars can have worn piston rings that cause engine damage. A complete engine rebuild is the best option. Piston rings can last between 250,000 and 350,000 miles if maintained correctly. Before installing piston rings, it is important to lubricate them. This will extend their life span. Rings should be lubricated while being installed to avoid abrasions on the cylinder walls and contaminants in the oil.

FAQ

What is the difference?

The two are similar but not identical. An automotive technician maintains cars, while a mechanic repairs them.

A mechanic should be able to do simple tasks quickly and have good manual dexterity. A mechanic should also be able accurately diagnose and repair problems.

A technician in automotive is more technical than a mechanic. They must be capable of reading blueprints and using tools such as drills, wrenches, etc.

They should also be capable of safely performing complex procedures. They must be familiar with all types of electrical and engine systems.

They should also be able understand how different parts interact.

A mechanic typically earns less than an automotive technician. However, both careers offer great opportunities.

What is the length of an automotive training course?

A course in automotive lasts three years.

The first year is dedicated to theory and learning about cars. The second year is spent on practical training where you learn how to drive, fix engines, and do other mechanical jobs around the car. You will spend the final year working in a local garage to gain real-world experience.

Is it worth becoming a mechanic?

The answer to this question depends on what you want from life if you are looking for money, then yes, but if you're looking for meaning and purpose, then no.

If you don't have any mechanics skills, then there's no point getting into it because you'll just end up wasting time. It's not going make you millionaire. You won't become famous. You won't be famous.

You would need to spend years learning how to do everything properly. You would still need to hire someone to fix your car if it breaks down. This is why most people don’t bother. They find something better to do instead.

Summarising, if your goal is to make lots of money, go for it. You can't live a meaningful existence if your goal is to make a living in the mechanic's business.
