FAQ

Is it hard to be an apprentice mechanic?

It's not easy, but you learn fast, and there are many opportunities for advancement.

You must have patience and perseverance. You must also know how to fix cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

Customers and loved ones can place a lot of pressure on you. However, you shouldn't be forced to make difficult decisions.

It could be a great job choice if you love fixing cars. It's a job where you can earn a decent salary and build up your business.

You might choose to take a different route. This is where you might be interested in becoming a technician.

This requires you to use your technical expertise in support of other workers. You might be able to assist technicians in troubleshooting problems or teach them new techniques.

Another option is to become an advisor in service. When customers bring their cars into a garage, they will receive advice and assistance.

The decision you make will depend on what you are looking for. There are plenty of options available, and you can choose which suits you best.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

Three main areas of employment are available for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. This is the best way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates have no difficulty learning about cars because they already know the basics and principles of mechanical engineering.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. This means that these jobs are usually more lucrative than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

It's not always easy to find a job. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

How long does an automotive course take?

An automotive course lasts for three years.

The first year focuses on theory and learning about cars. The second year is dedicated towards practical training. This includes learning how to drive, fix engine problems, and doing other maintenance jobs around your car. The last year of your training is spent on practical training, where you learn how to fix real-world problems.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
