FAQ

What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates are already familiar with basic mechanics and can therefore learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages are not associated with any one dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

What is the difference between an automotive technician and a mechanic?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. An automotive technician maintains cars, while a mechanic repairs them.

A mechanic should be able to do simple tasks quickly and have good manual dexterity. A mechanic must be able diagnose and fix problems quickly and accurately.

An automotive technician requires more technical skills than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They must also be able perform complex procedures safely. They should also be familiarized with the different types of engines as well as electrical systems.

They must also be able to understand how various parts interact with each other.

As a result, mechanics typically make less than technicians. There are many job opportunities in both.

What can I do to fix my car as an hobby?

It's a great hobby to take on if you are passionate about cars. You could repair them yourself, buy parts for them and sell them. Or just have fun with them. This would be a wonderful hobby if you're looking to find something completely different.

It isn't easy to turn it into a full time job. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. And you'll need to invest a lot of money too.

You may not be able to have an emotional connection with cars unless there is a valid reason.

What qualifications do you need to be a truck-mechanic?

Although you don’t have formal qualifications, you have extensive experience with engines and trucks. Your knowledge is valuable as you are able to quickly diagnose problems and work efficiently.

Your knowledge of diesel technology will allow you to identify the parts that are required to fix our vehicles.

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? Can I study part time?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Employers prefer applicants who have completed a full-time degree. It shows that your efforts have been put in and you have succeeded.

However, it doesn't mean you can't still work while studying. Many universities permit students to take courses during the summer holidays, and then finish their studies in the fall. Others allow students to study part-time all year.

Is it worth being a mechanic.

The answer to this question will depend on your goals for life. If you are looking for financial gain, then yes. However, if purpose and meaning are what you seek, then no.

You don't need to be a mechanic if you don't know how. It won't make you wealthy. It won't make your name famous. It is unlikely that your life will change.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. You would still need to hire someone to fix your car if it breaks down. That's why most people don't bother doing it at all. They find something more worthwhile.

You can make a lot of money if you are looking to do well. But if you want to live a meaningful life, stay away from the mechanic's industry.

Is it easy to get a job as an automotive mechanic?

Yes, it's possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. Try applying to a few jobs and seeing if the garages accept student applications. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. You might be able to refer someone.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
